I am a Year 6 at Good Shepherd School in Auckland. I am in Room 5 and my Teacher is Mrs Drummond.

Sherbet
Today we made sherbet. I was in a group of four. We used three ingredients to make it. The ingredients were icing sugar, baking powder, citric acid and tartaric acid. We used popsicle sticks to measure out our ingredients into the bowl. Our recipe was two scoops of icing sugar and one scoop of everything else. I learned that eating to much gives you a tummy ache and my favourite part was getting to make up our own recipe. Our groups sherbet was a true success and it was really fun to make it.

Potato Experiment
Today we did an experiment using potatoes. It's called a potato gun. We used straws, skewers and of course potato's. You poke the straw into the potato in to both the sides of the straw. Then you use the skewer to poke one of the potato's out and that makes the other bit of potato shoot out. It's all because of the air pressure. That's how it's supposed to work, but our guns didn't work. My gun didn't work because it wasn't air tight. 😞

Birds Beaks
In class today we did our first science experiment. The experiment was testing forceps. We were testing them to see how a bird picked up their food. We used skittles, gummy worms and paper. We made our predictions and then got to actually test them out. Our predictions weren't really accurate but Mrs Drummond told us that it is just a prediction. After the experiment we got to eat the lollies.

Water Colors
This term we are learning science. In our last science session we tried to guess if wet paper towels absorb water faster or if dry paper towels absorb water faster. We left the paper towels with the tips of the towels in the colored water. After lunch we came back in to class and saw that the dry paper towels absorb the water faster. This is because the wet towels already had water socked in them so it was harder for them to absorb more water, but the dry towels could absorb water faster because they are already dry so they can absorb the water faster. This is a photo of our experiment.

Animal Classification
Today we learned about how animals are classified into groups. Animals are either vertebrates (which means they have a spine) or invertebrates (which don't have a spine).
Inverterbrates are animals like jellyfish, crabs, insects and octopus.
Vertebrates are put into five groups. They are mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. Mammals have fur or hair and give birth to live young. Birds have feathers and lay hard shell eggs. Reptiles are cold-blooded and lay soft shell eggs. Amphibians breathe through there skin and need to keep their skin moist. Fish breathe through gills and have fins.
5 examples of each type:
Mammals: horses, humans, giraffes, cheetahs, dolphins.
Birds: doves, woodpecker, kea, fantail, kiwi.
Reptiles: snakes, chameleon, lizards, turtles, crocodile.
Fish: goldfish, salmon, kingfish, clownfish, snapper.
Amphibians: frogs, toads, salamander, caecilians, newts.

Science Roadshow
Last week the whole Connolly School went to the Science Roadshow. They presented the ice and fire show and the human body show, the ice and fire show was about different temperatures and the human body show was about how we digest our food. Also there were lots of exhibits to explore like a 3d printer and stuff on planets, water and the spin chair.
Here are some pictures of us at the Roadshow watching one of the shows.
