City Rail Link Art

As part of an art class with Miss Down we created images that will be displayed in the country's busiest rail station, once it opens to the public in 2023/2024.

The images will be used and turned in a ceramic tile and display within the station.

The Storm

I see the storm getting bigger and bigger,
I hear the wind rattling my windows as I drift of to sleep,
I smell the soapy dishwashing liquid as John washes the dishes,
I taste the hot Asian tea as mum reads to me through the whistling of the wind,
I touch my teddy bear so I'm not as terrified,
It makes me feel scared.

In Room 5 we did a senses poem on the storm in Auckland last night. this is my poem.

Fred's Memoirs

Present times are hard on us now. We are from France and i live in an orphanage. There are only 10 children at this orphanage. My name is Fred and There is a war happening in France. I’ve heard of people from France that go and fight in the war in the city (Paris) just outside ours. We have to pretend we are actually German when the German soldiers come because those are the people who are fighting against France. They are so powerful that they even have there own name (Nazis). We never get to go outside the gate and our matron who is called Matron peters has very strict rules about it even though she is so nice.

One afternoon all of the orphans were playing outside when we heard some noise in the distance, it got nearer and nearer until we could see acrobats, woman and even little girls in pink spangles twirling and whirling around. There was also a big wrinkled creature jumping and bumping around. At first i thought it was a very large cat or dog. Then a man in a waist coat came out of one of the many carriages with a big speaker in his hand shouting “The pine rings travelling circus has come to town and you can catch it all like the tightrope walkers, clowns, elephant and of course all our acrobats big or small. Tomorrow at 2:pm or Sunday at 7:pm, Come now!” Then I new what the creature was. I was so excited that I was screaming out to all the others. I was being so loud that we all had to come inside and I got a slap on the bottom. That afternoon I was thinking badly about the circus and decided I would run away and join it and become a little acrobat.

The next morning I climbed out of bed very quietly managing not to wake the others so I could sneak away to the circus. I had done it, I was there standing before a giant tent. I saw a little girl in a dressing gown looking rather lost. I went over to her because I was rather lost to, so I thought we could be rather lost together. But I was so wrong she was looking for a way to sneak out of the circus without being seen like me in the orphanage except I knew my way around because we had once gone on a field trip so I half knew the hills. We said hi and told each other our names.

We had a walk talking all about were we came from and why we both wanted to escape and join different things. She also told me why she wanted to leave the circus and I told her why I wanted to escape from the orphanage and join the circus. Until we couldn't see the tent or orphanage. Her name was Jenny and she was very peculiar but friendly and fun all at the same time. She also told me she was one of the younger girls in pink spangles on the tightrope. Suddenly I looked behind me realising we were in the middle of nowhere so we both just panicked and ran in all different directions until we heard a train coming towards us. I thought this train would be able to take us back to the orphanage but obviously Jenny had had much more experience and told me to hide behind a tree. Then I saw why we were hiding it was an army train taking people from France to one of the Nazi death camps.

The train had gone into the distance and I had thought that maybe some of the kids at the orphanage were in the train so I convinced Jenny to come with me and we started our adventure back over the hills. To hopefully find all of the orphans not in the train and all alive safely at the orphanage. Along with matron peters. Jenny and I went over several hills and down a couple valleys until finally we saw the gates of the orphanage. But we didn't see the circus and from what it looked liked we were standing on a patch of dead grass. Jenny told me that this was were the circus tent had been and that the tent always made a big square shaped square of dead grass.

I started running to the orphanage but Jenny stayed there and started crying but she soon stopped and ran after me. I asked if she was okay but she just said she was fine. (I think she missed the circus). As soon as we reached the gates I through them open and to my surprise found the the building had crumbled down. I thought maybe the elephant from the circus had accidentally stood on it. I had looked behind me to find Jenny crying again, but she wasn't crying for herself she was crying for me so we sat done and she told me the Nazis would have found out that we were from France and had bombed the orphanage. In no time I was crying to.

We walked along a cobbled road trying not to be seen by Nazis, because even Jenny was from France. Soon enough we heard the rattling engine of a car coming down the road coming towards us. There was a kind looking lady in the car. The lady had asked us how we were and that she was from France and that we could come to her house were she had some other french people taking refuge. I had hoped that it was all the people from the orphanage but I didn't get my hopes up because it might not have been them. But sure enough we arrived at her house and in her little living room stood all the ten orphans and matron peters. I was so relieved.

So here I am, writing my memoirs. The war has finished and I am one of the most famous writers in France. I live with my beautiful wife Jenny and my three little children John, Julie and Mia. I never thought I’d say this but I have a family and a happily ever after.
